METRO MAN!
Sarath Kumar tells CT why he chose to star as a hero in a Malayalam film
Sreedhar Pillai | TNN
Sarath Kumar is a happy man; his first solo hero Malayalam film Metro is releasing this Friday. The Tamil star has done what many consider as impossible — doing a full length film in Malayalam, a feat done only by Kamal Haasan several years ago. Sarath, who became a rage in Kerala after the stupendous success of Pazhassi Raja, did a couple of Malayalam films including the Mohanlal-Dileep multi-starrer Christian Brothers. In an exclusive interview to CT, Sarath Kumar talks about his career plans.
Why did you agree to do a Malayalam film as a solo hero?
In my opinion, Malayalam directors, with limited budgets, make some of the finest films in India. I have received a lot of critical acclaim for my role in Pazhassi Raja, and the audiences in Kerala seem to have loved my role in it. I’m doing Christian Brothers with Mohanlal and Dileep in which I play a pivotal role. It was during its making that Dileep approached me to do Metro, which he has produced.
What attracted you to Metro?
The script of Vyasan Edavankad and director Bipin Prabhakar attracted me to the film, which has a realistic
feeI. I play an upright cop who stands up for the common man. I have played a cop in many Tamil films but what makes Circle Inspector Jacob Alexander different is that he does not have a romantic interest nor deliver punch dialogues. It is the most realistic mature cop that I’ve ever played. The film revolves around three different stories that converge in the climax. Metro tells the parallel stories of the cop, a group of youngsters out on a fun trip and a gangster who controls Kochi.
How did you agree to do a film that does not have your regular formula?
What works for me in Tamil films may not work in Malayalam cinema. Bhavana is playing a crucial role in the film; but she is not my romantic interest. Heroism is there in all the characters that I have done so far, but its treatment and the way it is packaged are different.
Will you continue doing Malayalam films?
As long as I’m offered interesting films, I will continue to do Malayalam films. I’m also doing two films in Tamil. I have offers from Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, and will be taking up these offers shortly.
What next?
I will be trying to complete all my present assignments by the end of March. In April, I will be campaigning as I will be contesting in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.

On the move: Bhagath, Nivin, Bhavana, Arun and Beyon in ‘The Metro.'
Unravelling a mystery
VIJAY GEORGEBipin Prabhakar's ‘The Metro' is a thriller that is based on three separate incidents.
It is pitch dark and the shoot of director Bipin Prabhakar's ‘The Metro' is on at Convent Junction in Kochi, despite the rain that plays spoilsport. A group of youngsters are running and one of them falls. The first take is canned. The camera then goes in for some close-ups.
“We are narrating a thriller, based on three separate incidents that take place in Ernakulam. The first one involves the murder of a young politician Jaimy Padamadan, which is being investigated by circle inspector Jacob Alexander (Sarath Kumar). The murder occurs during a Parliament election.
The main suspect in this case is a fiery local don named Paruthikkadan (Suresh Krishna) and due to high level political pressure, the investigation gets affected,” says Bipin Prabhakar, who has earlier directed films like ‘One Way Ticket,' ‘Khaki' and ‘Samasthakeralam P.O.' The next thread in the story follows Anupama (Bhavana), an IT employee. She is being followed by gangsters. Why they have an eye on her is one of the mysteries to be solved on screen.
Five friends
The third incident in the movie involves a group of five friends, who are travelling from Thiruvilwamala to Pala. Nivin Pauly, who shot to fame as Prakashan in ‘Malarvady Arts Club,' plays named Harikrishnan, a youth working in the Gulf. Bhagath Manuel, who played Purushu in the same film, is Usman here. Suraj Venjarammoodu, Beyon and Arun complete the group. The action sequence involving the five is the one that is being shot now.
“Harikrishnan and his friends are travelling to Pala. He has a package from the Gulf, which he is supposed to give to another person. However, something unexpected happens during their journey,” says Nivin.
The group is excited about their action scenes in the movie. They add that working with action director Rajasekhar is gruelling as he wants realistic stunts.
Bhagath says that his character Usman, “is a hot- headed youth whose immature behaviour brings trouble for everyone. ” Just as the five go for the next shot, the rain interrupts the proceedings for a couple of minutes. As soon as it stops, the crew is ready with the gear and swings into action.
‘The Metro,' produced by Dileep under the banner of Graand Productions, comes with a tagline “it could happen to you.”
Cinematographer is Sri Sreeram. Lyrics by Rajeev Alumkal have been set to music by Shaan Rahman. Still photographer is Manju Aditya.
