METRO MAN!
Sarath Kumar tells CT why he chose to star as a hero in a Malayalam film

Sarath Kumar is a happy man; his first solo hero Malayalam film Metro is releasing this Friday. The Tamil star has done what many consider as impossible — doing a full length film in Malayalam, a feat done only by Kamal Haasan several years ago. Sarath, who became a rage in Kerala after the stupendous success of Pazhassi Raja, did a couple of Malayalam films including the Mohanlal-Dileep multi-starrer Christian Brothers. In an exclusive interview to CT, Sarath Kumar talks about his career plans.
Why did you agree to do a Malayalam film as a solo hero?
In my opinion, Malayalam directors, with limited budgets, make some of the finest films in India. I have received a lot of critical acclaim for my role in Pazhassi Raja, and the audiences in Kerala seem to have loved my role in it. I’m doing Christian Brothers with Mohanlal and Dileep in which I play a pivotal role. It was during its making that Dileep approached me to do Metro, which he has produced.
What attracted you to Metro?
The script of Vyasan Edavankad and director Bipin Prabhakar attracted me to the film, which has a realistic
feeI. I play an upright cop who stands up for the common man. I have played a cop in many Tamil films but what makes Circle Inspector Jacob Alexander different is that he does not have a romantic interest nor deliver punch dialogues. It is the most realistic mature cop that I’ve ever played. The film revolves around three different stories that converge in the climax. Metro tells the parallel stories of the cop, a group of youngsters out on a fun trip and a gangster who controls Kochi.
How did you agree to do a film that does not have your regular formula?
What works for me in Tamil films may not work in Malayalam cinema. Bhavana is playing a crucial role in the film; but she is not my romantic interest. Heroism is there in all the characters that I have done so far, but its treatment and the way it is packaged are different.
Will you continue doing Malayalam films?
As long as I’m offered interesting films, I will continue to do Malayalam films. I’m also doing two films in Tamil. I have offers from Telugu, Kannada and Hindi, and will be taking up these offers shortly.
What next?
I will be trying to complete all my present assignments by the end of March. In April, I will be campaigning as I will be contesting in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections.
